Are you passionate about education and want to help shape the future of our school? We are looking for dedicated individuals to join our governing body and play a vital role in the success of Marish Academy Trust.
What Does a Governor Do?
As a governor at Marish Academy Trust, you will work alongside other Trustees, Governors and school leaders to:
Set the strategic direction of the school and ensure we provide high-quality education for all our 802 pupils
Hold school leaders to account for the educational performance and effective use of resources
Oversee financial performance and make sure our budget is spent wisely
Monitor school policies and ensure they are working effectively in practice
Support and challenge the headteacher and senior leadership team
Ensure safeguarding procedures protect all our children
You will not be involved in the day-to-day running of the school – that is the job of the headteacher and staff. Instead, you will provide strategic oversight and support.
What Skills Do I Need?
You do not need to be an education expert! We are looking for people who have:
A strong commitment to improving outcomes for children
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team
Curiosity and willingness to learn – we will provide training and support
Time to dedicate to the role (typically 10-12 hours per term, including evening meetings).
What is the Time Commitment?
Governors typically need to commit to:
Attending governing body meetings (usually 10 per year, held in the evening either in person or online)
Visiting the school during the day to see policies in action and meet staff and pupils
Reading papers and preparing for meetings (usually sent out a week in advance)
Attending training sessions to develop your skills and knowledge
What Will I Get Out of It?
Being a governor is incredibly rewarding. You will:
Make a real difference to the lives of children in your community
Develop new skills in leadership, finance, and strategic planning
Gain insights into how schools work
Be part of a supportive team working towards a common goal
Receive comprehensive training and ongoing support
Checks and Requirements
Governors in Academies are required to have an enhanced DBS check. It is the responsibility of the governing body to apply for the certificate for any governors who do not already have one.
Governance is not a regulated activity relating to children, so governors do not need a children’s barred list check unless, in addition to their governance duties, they also engage in regulated activity.
We will support you through this process – there is no cost to you.
Types of Governor Roles
We have vacancies for:
Trustees – appointed for their specific skills or experience
Parent governors – elected by parents/carers to bring a parental perspective
